A Guide to the Common Bird-fish

A Guide to the Common Bird-fish by Penelope Kenny

About The Artist - Penelope Kenny

Penelope Kenny is an Australian born artist who now lives and works in South East England. She studied Visual Art at the University of Melbourne and completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Brighton. She has exhibited widely, both in the UK and abroad, representing Britain at the prestigious 6th Kyoto Hanga International Print Biennale- Japan/UK, 2012.

Her work explores our relationship with nature, and between humans and other animals, especially in connection to transhumanism, evolution, hybrids and biotechnology. Through her hybrid creatures she investigates the potential outcomes of humans trying to control evolution through artificial and genetic manipulation and scientific tampering with the species boundaries.

Drawing inspiration from her experience of time spent outdoors and with the natural world, antique reference books and natural history illustration, her work reimagines the postmodern animal. She creates bespoke wallpapers, book works and limited edition screenprints using hand-made inks made from ground pure pigments and metallic glazes.
