The Cameron Twins are a collaborative artistic duo of identical twins Abigail and Phebe, who work in screen printing, digital montage, photography, casting, sculpture, and installation. Their work is informed by a vividly coloured and naïve aesthetic and combines old paintings, photographs, notes, and drawings in montages that explore childhood imagination and dreams.
The Cameron Twins draw on their shared experience of growing up together and their collective nostalgia. Print is an important part of Abigail and Phebe’s practice, as it enables them to create doubled and mirrored images that reflect their experience as identical twins. The Cameron Twins hand-pull their screenprints, embracing the unique and imperfect effects and how this imbues their work with a fun and child-like quality. They print multiple players, applying different materials and sizes and stencilling over the top, resulting in new, complex compositions and images. The Cameron Twins draw on familiar childhood pop culture references, including Barbie, Trolls, and My Little Pony. They say about this tendency; 'We enjoy using this popular imagery in our sculptures and prints as they add a playful and witty quality to the work and adds to the connectivity of our art across ages and social confines whilst still remaining personal and anecdotal’. The combination of the bright colour palette and the recognisable subject matter is misleadingly cheerful, creating a juxtaposition with the more sinister and dark imagery that is revealed on closer inspection.
