These new UV prints on Birch Ply are stacks built from experiments in mark-making, painted textures and compositional crops direct from Darren's studio practice. Putting them back together becomes an exercise in play and chance; arranging individual pieces to make something new. Creativity inspiring creativity. For Darren, viewing our worlds more playfully like this enables us to be more present, more aware and with more focus on pleasure. His work lands at the intersection of playfulness and resourcefullness. As an artist fuelled by curiosity, his work is led by a ‘what if..’ mindset. For Darren, re-appropriating and re-purposing what surrounds us enables us to reimagine our landscape and open doors to new creative thoughts and possibilities. Printing directly to Birch Ply means that no two prints are the same as the UV cured inks are embedded to the surface of the wood grain. Each print is signed and numbered on the reverse.

“As children we experience the world through a lens of awe and wonder. It’s a truly joyful time filled with adventure, exploration and curiosity. Without any preconceptions shadowing our mind, It’s a very honest and highly tactile way in which we experience our existence. As we develop towards adulthood, our creative spirit can become curtailed as we find ourselves being more self-aware and more self-conscious. Our preconceptions of the world around us tend to guide our decision making and definitions of ‘what is’ and ‘what is not’ can often become the compass in which we navigate our experiences of life. My mission is to make tangible this sense of unchained creative freedom and use it to encourage and revive the limitless possibilities of an adventurous mind.
