‘American Blues’ is an Original Oil on Canvas work by contemporary artist Brian Jones. The piece is signed by the artist.

Contemporary artist Brian Jones is known for his ‘New Pop Art’, which takes the 1960s movement to task on its own terms: where the work of Warhol and Paolozzi, Liechtenstein and Johns, incorporated familiar images from mass culture, Jones incorporates their - by now iconic - artworks into his own, to push the possibilities of Pop for the twenty-first century.

Painted in 2011, ‘American Blues’ is a bold interpretation of the American flag, forming part of Jones’ ‘Great American Flag’ series. “I didn't listen to anything except for Blues throughout the production of this painting,” says Jones. “From Robert Johnson and Bessie Smith, right through to Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker. A great excuse for a Blue-out.” Recalling the tactile flag paintings of Jasper Johns, Jones’ take on the American flag reflects the tense racial politics that define the USA today. Smart, brilliant, and breathtakingly beautiful, ‘American Blues’ offers a bold new art for the twenty-first century.
