Work by Ford Madox Brown
Ford Madox Brown (1821 – 1893) was an English painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his distinctively graphic style. Although Brown himself was never an official member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - a group of British artists known for their attention to detail, vibrant colours, and interest in scenes from literature – he was associated with this style, because he became friendly with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others in the group.
Brown adopted many of their stylistic tendencies, particularly the use of bright colours and attention to detail – along with their belief that art should be true to nature and morally edifying.
