Warrior Universe by John Hoyland
John Hoyland (1934-2011) was a London-based British artist: and perhaps one of the country's leading abstract painters of his generation. John Hoyland's art prints were characterised by simple shapes, high-key colour and flat picture surfaces. His paintings are closely aligned with Post-Painterly Abstraction, Colour Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction.
But John Hoyland preferred not to be known as an abstract painter, and when we asked why, he answered: 'It's just too abstract a word. It smacks always of geometry to me, of rational thought. There's no geometry, there's no rectangles in nature, no real straight lines. There's only the circle, the one really powerful form in nature I keep getting drawn back to.'
