The Pond

This museum art print is of L.S.Lowry,s 1950 oil on canvas painting The Pond,, which is now in the Tate collection. The Pond, is an impressive industrial landscape characteristic of Lowry,s style and interests; smoking chimneys, terraced housing, factories, a viaduct, and matchstick, figures. Lowry considered this to be his finest industrial landscape. モThis is a composite picture built up from a blank canvas. I hadn,t the slightest idea of what I was going to put in the canvas when I started the picture but it eventually came out as you see it. This is the way I like working best.ヤ (L.S. Lowry)

About The Artist - L.S Lowry

Born in Stretford in 1887, L.S.Lowry is best known for images of 'match-stick' men and 'match-stick' cats and dogs set against the backdrop of industrial northern England, found in works such as 'Coming Home from the Mill' and 'The Organ Grinder'.

L.S.Lowry is known for depicting these urban landscapes in his art work, images of factory walls, belching chimneys, looming mills, the streets below teeming with figures, moving in waves towards, or away from, mill gateways, mines, football matches, and political meetings. Classic images of the North of England in years gone by, beautifully executed in stunning colours and an expert hand in beautiful art works.
