This is a beautiful museum quality giclee print of ‘The Haywain’ by John Constable.
Now a classic image of the bucolic English countryside in its time ‘The Haywain’ was shocking and ground breaking. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821 and filed to find a buyer.
The scene is based on a view in Flatford Suffolk that can still be seen today. Constable took many sketches on the site but created the final painting in his studio in London.
To the right is a cottage then the river with the Hay Wain which is the name of the type of cart the horse is pulling in the centre of the picture. In the foreground there is a dog and in the background there is the trees that line the river and beyond them a meadow.

About The Artist - John Constable

John Constable (1776 - 1837) was an English Romantic painter, famous for his landscapes, which are mostly of the Suffolk countryside, where he was born and lived. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821, "painting is but another word for feeling".

This precept guided his career, as John Constable developed a unique style, combining objective studies of nature with a deeply personal vision of the countryside around his boyhood home. Although his art prints are now among the most popular and valuable in British art, he was never financially successful and did not become a member of the establishment until he was elected to the Royal Academy at the age of 52. We have a beautiful range of art prints from John Constable, right here at artrepublic.
