ARTIST STORY
The artist places significance on his artistic methods, claiming that “it’s very important to me that the textures, drips and strokes are apparent, so the negative space surrounding my artwork is important in keeping the piece fresh”. Gavin’s work spans a diverse range of topics from iconic and nostalgic images such as cassette tapes and ice lollies, to the unabashed exploration of queer culture. His contemplative depictions of homosexual males examine the stereotypes and expectations that surround gay men. Regardless of subject, we love how Gavin places such emphasis on storytelling and creates engaging works of art that evoke joy for the viewer. Gavin steadily built up his own art portfolio whilst studying his Fine Art degree. After graduating in 2000 he was heavily involved in the creation of graphic novels, where he developed his illustration skills. Gavin has been a member of Print Club London for a number of years and he finds inspiration in the creative workspace and the connections he has made with fellow artists. Accolades include the art critic Nancy Durrant covering Gavin in her Great Art Guide for The Times, and a range of book covers designed for Bloomsbury Publishing. His work has been shown regularly at the Affordable Art Fair, and he was one of 20 artists selected to exhibit at Film 4’s Summer Screen Season at Somerset House. We’ve been working with Gavin Dobson since 2017.
