‘Sunflowers in November’ is an original painting by contemporary artist Lee Ellis. Hand painted onto canvas, the piece is signed by the artist.

Contemporary artist Lee Ellis is a master of merging styles: drawing together the figurative with the abstract, Ellis’s paintings are bold, bright, and brimming with expressive character. A latter-day still life, ‘Sunflowers in November’ depicts a rose pink vase filled with yellow sunflowers and set against a cherry-red background. In homage to the legendary Van Gogh, Ellis has experimented with colour, texture, and composition like a true Impressionist, capturing the vibrancy and vitality of the arrangement through bold, perspectival subjectivity. Yet this is no copycat canvas: though self-consciously indebted to Van Gogh, Ellis’s ‘Sunflowers in November’ speaks to the twenty-first century, drawing on traditional forms and materials to create a strong, contemporary aesthetic.

About The Artist - Lee Ellis

Lee Ellis graduated from the University of the West of England, where he studied Graphic Design in 2006. Despite working in the Graphic Design industry he found his artistic expression grew into portrait painting, developing, over the years, a personal and distinctive style.

His insatiable desire to create brings him to embrace different artistic mediums, from printmaking to drawing and painting. With an expressive and bold style, immediately striking with his unusual juxtaposition of bright colours and dark subjects, Lee’s paintings in particular convey an emotional and visceral angst within his figures. From humans to animals, he never fails to depict the inner turmoil of his characters. He achieves this effect by employing heavy, raw and expressive brushstrokes that make his painting style poignant and immediately affecting.

Lee currently works and lives in Bristol, UK.
