The work of Maria Rivans is known for its mash up of surrealism meets pop-art. Her scrapbook-like collages - with their 1950s pop-culture references - have all the playful delight of an early Paolozzi, mixed with the strange surreality of a Dali, and brought up to date with a certain sophistication and quirky aesthetic, unique to Rivans.

Inspired by Hitchcock's 1959 classic, North by Northwest, Rushmore stitches together an off-beat landscape from disparate elements. Metropolitan architecture dominates the skyline, while pastoral elements burrow underground, creating historic roots for this futuristic hyperscape. Despite the artwork's title, Rivans omits any visual depiction of Mount Rushmore, the famous final setting for the film's concluding scene. Nevertheless, Rushmore beautifully captures the feel of the flick, without surrendering to slavish representation, for a work of sheer creative power.

Maria Rivans

Maria lives and works in Brighton, UK, and is a contemporary artist best known for her bright and eclectic collages. Her scrapbook-style aesthetic is created by appropriating vintage ephemera and combining it with vivid, and often humorous, imagery. Maria adopts a fresh approach to collage by maintaining dialogue with cultures and imagery of the past and using the style to reflect the complex world we live in. Maria has exhibited in the UK and Europe, as well as Hong Kong and New York.

We love the precision that Maria applies to the process of collating and assembling her compositions. She dedicates a large amount of time to locating the perfect imagery for each surreal artwork. Down to the smallest detail, each element of her collages are used to forge a unique identity for the figures in each piece. We particularly love how every one of Maria's collage portraits tell a unique story and create a unique narratives that bring each of Maria's characters to life.
