Born and raised in a video shop in Kings Cross in the 1980s, Brittin's free-spirited childhood has heavily influenced his artistic practice. The artist says of this influence: "I was born in a video shop in the 80's so I've seen some pretty crazy things. Back in the days when you could only rent films - that's how old I am - and the things I saw as a child inspired me...someone described my work once as "when special effects meets paper" and I really liked that. I try to make my work look fantastical and lovely but my upbringing has definitely inspired what I like and what I want to transmit." After studying graphic design and advertising, Brittin went on work with Damien Hirst & Sokari Douglas Camp CBE. Brittin explores natural and unnatural camouflage in an incredible light, resulting in his work being described as “when special F/X and paper first meet”. Creativity and simplicity are key factors in Brittin’s designs. The artist has two very distinct styles, highly detailed sketches and basic primary coloured images, which he sometimes combines. Brittin uses scalpels and nail scissors to cut out pieces of vintage wallpaper and classic paintings, before scanning them onto the computer. The completion of artworks can take from a few days, to four weeks, with Brittin saying that creating the compositions comes naturally to him. His love for flowers has grown since becoming an artist, and they are a big inspiration for his work.
We love how Rosco's complex prints often focus on people interacting, whether that be with their families, their partners or their phones. The viewer gets an intimate insight into the lives of strangers; even though each figure is a silhouette, Rosco's artworks gleam with personality and character.
