About The Artist - Tim Fowler

Tim Fowler is a contemporary British artist, whose work is characterised by its bold and intense use of colour. Graduating from Sheffield Hallam University in 2007, with a degree in Contemporary Fine Art, Fowler began his career painting architectural structures and motifs, before turning to the portraiture for which he is known today. Still, a feeling for the architectural persists: a sense of deconstruction resides in the angular shapes that pervade the portraits, transforming each living figure into a work of contemplative art.

Fowler eschews figurative realism. Although his paintings and prints capture their subject’s likeness - often sirens from the silver screen - the use of thick pigment, hard lines, and clashing colour asserts a refusal to collapse life and art. A statement on beauty, Fowler’s work asks its viewer to consider its forms and its textures, its very materiality, as art for art’s sake. Working predominantly with acrylic, Fowler builds up a thick, almost impasto surface, adding subtle spots of spray paint, marker pens, oils, and graffiti inks, to create a distinctly urban, twenty-first crater character.

Fowler has exhibited his work across London, including solo shows at The London Westbank Gallery, Pure Evil Gallery, and Darren Baker Gallery, as well as at high profile art fairs.
