Oli Fowler is a contemporary British artist, who specialises in screen printing and graphic design. Not limited to a single process, Fowler incorporates graphics, illustration, photography and photomontage into his work, combining these different mediums with an experimental approach. His recent collection, ‘Nostalgia’ incorporates hand-rusted metal for a textured approach that recalls the seminal work of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.
‘Popeye’ consists of a screen-printed collage, laid onto a rusted metal sheet and sealed with three layers of varnish. A box of popcorn, emblazoned with Popeye, sits at the centre, while brightly coloured flowers seem to sprout from the commodity while other disparate items - marbles, a badge, a cigarette lighter - cluster around it. Fowler has beautifully captured a sense of nostalgia, evoking 1960s styles with contemporary panache.
