Penstemons by Winifred Nicholson
Winifred Nicholson (1893 – 1981) was a landscape and flower painter widely respected in the London art world. By the late 1920’s - after solo exhibitions at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1927 and the Leicester Gallery in 1930 her popularity grew even more. Encouraged to paint as a child by her grandfather - the artist George Howard - Winifred Nicholson studied at the Bryam Shaw School of Art.
With a lifelong fascination for rainbow and spectrum colours, she made particularly strong and innovative use of colours in many of her paintings. This way, she developed a personalised impressionistic style, that concentrated on domestic subjects and landscapes, but her favourite subject was flowers, which she painted to convey her ideas about colour.
