‘My Friends Think I’m Ugly’ is an original painting by contemporary artist Lee Ellis. Hand painted using Oils, Pastels, Acrylic, and Spray Paint on Canvas, the piece is signed by the artist.

Contemporary artist Lee Ellis draws together the figurative with the abstract, to create textural paintings that brim with expressive character. Often dark in tone and mood, Ellis’ work is reminiscent of the tortured works of Francis Bacon, shot through with an abstract expressionist quality, that makes for a powerful, contemporary aesthetic.

‘My Friends Think I’m Ugly’ forms part of a larger series, inspired by the lyrics of Tom Waits. With its title taken from the track ‘Going Out West’, the painting explores the fine line between the figurative and the abstract, depicting a man’s portrait, impressionistically consigned to the canvas through thick paint daubs and blocky striation. Using a bold palette of bright blues and greens, Ellis continues the Waits homage, embedding various visual cues through meticulous mark-making.

About The Artist - Lee Ellis

Lee Ellis graduated from the University of the West of England, where he studied Graphic Design in 2006. Despite working in the Graphic Design industry he found his artistic expression grew into portrait painting, developing, over the years, a personal and distinctive style.

His insatiable desire to create brings him to embrace different artistic mediums, from printmaking to drawing and painting. With an expressive and bold style, immediately striking with his unusual juxtaposition of bright colours and dark subjects, Lee’s paintings in particular convey an emotional and visceral angst within his figures. From humans to animals, he never fails to depict the inner turmoil of his characters. He achieves this effect by employing heavy, raw and expressive brushstrokes that make his painting style poignant and immediately affecting.

Lee currently works and lives in Bristol, UK.
