ARTIST STORY
Massimo Vitali is an Italian photographer based in Italy and Germany, best known for his Italian beach panoramas and crowds enjoying their leisure time. From pools to beaches to piazzas, Vitali’s scenes of crowds interacting are inspired by the artist’s curiosity for people and how they think.

We love how Vitali is dedicated to investigating and exposing what we view as ‘normal’, with his large scenes of commodified leisure expressing the artist’s “deep curiosity that I possess for people, for what they do and how they think”. Vitali first worked as a photojournalist in the 1970s and later took a job as a movie camera operator, and studied photography at the London College of Printing. Turning to Fine Art photography in 1995, Vitali would use a large format film camera to capture images over a large area such as beaches and public areas. This then became Vitali’s signature style, and his work is now collected in museums across the world, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Musée National d’Art Moderne and Centre Pompidou, both in Paris, and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
