Mrs Smith is a giclée print by Maria Rivans. From a limited edition of 75, this print is signed and numbered by the artist.

The work of Maria Rivans is known for its distinctive mash-up of surrealism meets Pop-Art. Her iconic pin-up portraits are assembled form scrapbook-like collages, where vintage ephemera mingle with 1950s pop-culture references, to achieve the ease of an early Paolozzi print, merged with the strange surreality of a David Lynch masterpiece. Mrs Smith depicts the iconic face of the 1940s silver screen siren, Lana Turner, in an inspired portrayal of evolution on planet earth. Rivans has created a beautiful bricolage headdress around the black and white portrait, building up from a collar of marine protozoa microorganisms (the first animals), into efflorescent flora and fauna, exotic animals, and, finally, children playing happily in a treehouse. In Rivans’s striking analogy, earth becomes the film noir and Mother Nature the femme fatale, beautiful and strong, while fallible and fragile. Creating visual harmony out of earthly chaos, Mrs Smith is the love, the life, and the beauty of our planet: the experience of consciousness and what it means to be human.

About The Artist - Maria Rivans

Maria lives and works in Brighton, UK, and is a contemporary artist best known for her bright and eclectic collages. Her scrapbook-style aesthetic is created by appropriating vintage ephemera and combining it with vivid, and often humorous, imagery.

Maria adopts a fresh approach to collage by maintaining dialogue with cultures and imagery of the past and using the style to reflect the complex world we live in. We love the precision the artist applies to collating and assembling her compositions in order to find the perfect imagery to piece together each surreal artwork.

Maria studied 3D design at the University of Brighton. She has exhibited in both solo and group shows across the UK and Europe, as well as Hong Kong, Korea, and New York. Her artwork has been featured in The Times newspaper and in 2018 one of her artworks was selected for the Royal Academy’s 250th Summer Exhibition.

We’ve been working with Maria Rivans since 2010.
