Rivans transforms Audrey Hepburn, the darling of vintage cinema, into Gaia, the personification of the Earth and the ancestral mother of all life. References to Audrey’s Britishness – St Paul’s Cathedral, a dainty English tea cup – sit beside more exotic motifs – a plumed cockatoo, a hummingbird in flight – to capture the starlet’s globe-trotting adventures and humanitarian activism. Always alert to contradiction and opposition, Rivans offsets feminine fragility – powder pink flowers, delicate dinner plates – against Superwoman strength. But at root, Lily is as much a tale of our power as of our weakness: a reminder that we share the planet with other forms of life, and that only through harmony and humility can we discover the true beauty of the natural world.

Maria lives and works in Brighton, UK, and is a contemporary artist best known for her bright and eclectic collages. Her scrapbook-style aesthetic is created by appropriating vintage ephemera and combining it with vivid, and often humorous, imagery.
Maria adopts a fresh approach to collage by maintaining dialogue with cultures and imagery of the past and using the style to reflect the complex world we live in. We love the precision the artist applies to collating and assembling her compositions in order to find the perfect imagery to piece together each surreal artwork. Maria studied 3D design at the University of Brighton. She has exhibited in both solo and group shows across the UK and Europe, as well as Hong Kong, Korea, and New York. Her artwork has been featured in The Times newspaper and in 2018 one of her artworks was selected for the Royal Academy’s 250th Summer Exhibition. We’ve been working with Maria Rivans since 2010.
We love the precision that Maria applies to the process of collating and assembling her compositions. She dedicates a large amount of time to locating the perfect imagery for each surreal artwork. Down to the smallest detail, each element of her collages are used to forge a unique identity for the figures in each piece. We particularly love how every one of Maria's collage portraits tell a unique story and create a unique narratives that bring each of Maria's characters to life.
