All my images are sourced vintage printed material from 1890 to 1970. I continually scavenge for materials to use, I can't walk past a second hand shop, charity shop or boot market without having to go in.

Our Notes
Lily (Audrey Hepburn) is a vibrant and striking artwork by Maria Rivans. The work combines the iconic image of actress Audrey Hepburn with bright and playful collage techniques to create an image that is both beautiful and surreal. Maria sources her imagery from second-hand shops, car boot sales, and charity shops, and we love how this gives her work a nostalgic yet modern feel.
Maria’s depiction of Audrey reflects the stars globe-trotting legacy and combines symbols of Britishness such as St. Paul's Cathedral with exotic flowers and animals. The detailed nature of this artwork means that it could stand alone as a statement piece or be used to add colour to a gallery wall.

Additional Information:
Rivans transforms Audrey Hepburn, the darling of vintage cinema, into Gaia, the personification of the Earth and the ancestral mother of all life. References to Audrey’s Britishness – St Paul’s Cathedral, a dainty English tea cup – sit beside more exotic motifs – a plumed cockatoo, a hummingbird in flight – to capture the starlet’s globe-trotting adventures and humanitarian activism. Always alert to contradiction and opposition, Rivans offsets feminine fragility – powder pink flowers, delicate dinner plates – against Superwoman strength. But at root, Lily is as much a tale of our power as of our weakness: a reminder that we share the planet with other forms of life, and that only through harmony and humility can we discover the true beauty of the natural world.

Rivans studied 3D design at the University of Brighton, the city she lives and works in today and adores. She has a wide range of influences, including the Dada movement, David Hockney, Hieronymus Bosch, Jeff Koons, Frida Kahlo, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Hamilton, and The Brit Art Movement. She also draws inspiration from outside of visual art, looking to music, film, and fashion in defining her aesthetic. Rivans’ vintage imagery is sourced from second-hand shops, car boot sales, and charity shops. Rivans’ collection of images, which numbers in the thousands, were printed between 1890 and 1970. By collaging and intertwining different film and TV genres, Rivans creates tales and shows how the fragmented and complex world we inhabit can be pieced back together. Rivans has exhibited in both solo and group shows across the UK and Europe, as well as Hong Kong, Korea, and New York. In 2015, her artwork 'Carina' was the face of Scoop International Fashion Show at the Saatchi Gallery, and 'Scarlett' headed Nordea Private Banking's campaign at Stockholm Affordable Art Fair. Rivans' artwork has been featured in The Times newspaper and in 2018 one of her artworks was selected for the Royal Academy’s 250th Summer Exhibition.
We love the precision that Maria applies to the process of collating and assembling her compositions. She dedicates a large amount of time to locating the perfect imagery for each surreal artwork. Down to the smallest detail, each element of her collages are used to forge a unique identity for the figures in each piece. We particularly love how every one of Maria's collage portraits tell a unique story and create a unique narratives that bring each of Maria's characters to life.
