ARTIST STORY

Maggi Hambling

Maggi Hambling (b. 1945) is a British painter and sculptor best known for her evocative land and seascapes and expressive portraits. Hambling is best known for her sculptures that sparked conversation and sometimes split public and critical opinion, such as A Conversation with Oscar Wilde in Charing Cross, London, and Scallop on Aldeburgh beach, Suffolk. In 1980, Hambling became the first Artist in Residence at the National Gallery, London, and has since gone on to receive an OBE and CBE for her services to painting.

A NOTE FROM US

WHAT WE LOVE

We love how Hambling’s paintings call to mind the work of renowned artists J.M.W Turner and John Constable and Hokusai, even as she forges her own identity through her gestural brushstrokes and intricate mark making. This combination of art historical influences and revitalised marks mean Hambling's paintings are intriguing and fresh - a contemporary spin on old techniques. We particularly appreciate Hambling's dedication to paying homage to past great artists, all whilst forging her own path.

Limited Edition

So you’ve found your perfect limited edition artwork, but what does this actually mean? Limited editions are original artworks that an artist creates in a particular print medium, such as a giclée print, screen print or photograph. Our limited edition artworks are specifically created by our talented artists with a maximum edition number in mind. The term ‘limited edition’ refers to the total number of artworks that are available for that particular piece. The edition size can vary widely between artworks, however most of the time our artists create editions in small numbers ranging from 10 to a few hundred.
