‘Life’, by contemporary artist Clive Sefton is created by sandblasting a high-quality mirror to leave 42 concentric circles. Paint is applied to the back of the piece to create an unusual effect. It is from a limited edition of 42 and is signed and numbered by the artist.

Brighton-based artist Clive Sefton is known for his word search prints: typographically beautiful pieces with an interactive element, inviting the viewer to scour the print for hidden words and phrases. Sefton enjoys the element of fun, but his work also engages with the possibility of finding something new in an image, on every viewing.

‘Life’ features 42 concentric mirrored circles that involve the viewer as they catch themselves, reflected and refracted, in the strips.

Deeply symbolic, the rings resemble the life rings of a tree or the gentle ripples in a pool, while the number of circles is heavy with allusion: in Kabbalistic tradition, 42 is said to be the number with which God created the Universe and, more recently, sci-fi writer Douglas Adams famously endowed it with significance, as the “answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.”

Sefton has produced a remarkably beautiful piece of art: a textural and shimmering graphic design set against a white background, fusing futuristic minimalism with a retro pattern.

About The Artist - Clive Sefton

Clive Sefton is a Brighton-based artist and designer. His series of "Word Search" art works combine clean and beautiful designs with fun and interaction.

Sefton has always been interested in typography and wanted to create a typographic art print with a twist. "I also like interactivity with artwork, and the idea that each time someone looks at a piece, they might see something else." he explains "Some people prefer to not draw on the glass, leaving the piece solely as a graphic form, but others feel they need to circle the words and get a sense of achievement and satisfaction by doing so. I like the fact it can be shown in so many ways," says Sefton.

His art work has featured in Creative Review and has been bought by a number of well-respected people, including Fatboy Slim. His art work also appears at W Hotel Leicester Square, Kings College London and a number of other locations.
