ARTIST STORY
Gareth is a Singapore-born contemporary artist who grew up in Wales, but now lives and works in Cheshire. Influenced by childhood memories, vintage textiles, comic books and street styles, his work uses a range of techniques from traditional pen and brushwork to photography.
Gareth is a Singapore-born contemporary artist who grew up in Wales, but now lives and works in Cheshire. Influenced by childhood memories, vintage textiles, comic books and street styles, his work uses a range of techniques from traditional pen and brushwork to photography.
We love his nonconformist combination of multiple different mediums to create colourful compositions. Gareth successfully merges his multicultural background and personal memories with Eastern imagery and symbolism, unconstrained by the more traditional codes of art. Gareth was obsessed with painting as a child, but he lost touch with his passion for art after succumbing to the ‘real world’ of responsibilities. In the artist's own words: “family, work and responsibilities filled every moment but now I have more time. A second chance to pursue my childhood dream.” As Gareth has built up his artistic practice, he has gathered interest from contemporary art collectors and exhibited extensively across UK galleries and art fairs. We’ve been working with Gareth since 2019.

AR: What was the inspiration behind your new Skate Deck collection? Gareth: With a series called ‘Urban’ Geisha, using the medium of skate decks, in my head seems logical. I also like the fact that the imagery is split across three decks mirroring the segmentation of the image in Japanese screens. The medium ties the traditional and contemporary together.
