ARTIST STORY
Justine Smith's current work is concerned with the concept of money and how it touches almost every aspect of our lives. She is interested in money as a conduit of power and also in the value systems with which we surround it. On a physical level a banknote is just a piece of paper, but it is what a banknote actually represents that is central to Smith’s work. Through her collages, prints and sculptures she examines our relationship with money in a political, moral, ecological and social sense, whilst also exploiting the physical beauty of the notes.

She has exhibited her work in galleries and museums internationally. Recent notable commissions include a commission to create a unique artwork and a limited- edition print to celebrate HM the Queen’s 95th birthday for the Royal Mint, a sculpture to celebrate the 325th Anniversary of the Bank of England, creating a limited edition Swatch Watch and textile designs for Liberty X Nike. Her work is held in the permanent collections of The British Museum, The Fitzwilliam Museum, The British Council, The British Library, The Bank of England, The Royal Mint Museum and the UK Government Art Collection along with many international corporations, financial institutions and private collections. Her work has appeared on the silver screen in hit movie 'Money Monster' in HBO series 'Succession' in addition to being a featured artist in TV documentary 'Art & Money'. Press coverage includes The Times, The Telegraph, the Wall Street Journal and the Evening Standard.
We love how Justine manipulates currency to create beautiful yet thought-provoking imagery. Through her collages, prints and sculptures she examines our relationship with money in a political, moral, ecological and social sense, whilst also exploiting the physical beauty of the notes. Justine transforms a rectangular note into an intricate and detailed composition.
