ARTIST STORY
Jonas Wood is an American artist who is known for his bold, graphic artworks that challenge ideas of perspective. Wood’s instantly recognisable aesthetic is heavily inspired by both art history and the artist’s daily environment. Wood’s process of creation involves a series of steps, but most of his works originate from a single photo.
From there, he will either make a collage of a variety of collected photographs or create a drawing, and then translate this into a painting. This humble process and its fragmented steps is evident in the geometric and flat planes of Wood’s work. We love how Wood seeks to extract the beauty from the mundane. Growing up, Wood was surrounded by his grandfather's art collection that featured illustrious artists such as Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon. This inspired Wood to explore the intersection between the past and present, and his work is heavily influenced by movements such as pop art and cubism. Wood completed an MFA in painting and drawing in 2002 at the University of Washington, Seattle. Shortly after graduating, Wood moved to Los Angeles, where he now shares a studio with his wife. The Los Angeles Gallery Black Dragon Society was the first to give Wood a solo exhibition in 2006, and a year later the artist had successful shows at the Shane Campbell Gallery in Chicago and the Anton Kern Gallery in New York. From here, his work continues to be exhibited regularly and his pieces can be found in the permanent collection of galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
