Jasper Johns, born in 1930, is an American painter and printmaker of the twentieth century, and a forerunner of Pop art. Jasper Johns uses commonplace images such as flags, maps, targets or numbers as the starting-point for his art prints. He explains that ‘the things the mind already knows’ were his ideal subject because of the host of varied meanings each carried with it. By representing common objects and images in the realm of fine art, Jasper Johns broke down the boundaries traditionally separating fine art and everyday life.
