Printed by Universal Limited Art Editions, Bay Shore, New York and published by Association of Artists Against Torture, St. Gallen, Switzerland. Committed to the establishment and preservation of human rights since 1977, the Association for the Prevention of Torture commissioned the 'Artists Against Torture' portfolio in 1993. Nineteen leading contemporary artists including Donald Judd, Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, and Antoni Tˆpies, among others, each contributed one artwork. Here, in his contribution, Johns offers a creative reinterpretation of Northern Renaissance master Hans Holbein, presenting abstracted silhouetted figures in this stunning lithograph in colours on paper.

About The Artist - Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns, born in 1930, is an American painter and printmaker of the twentieth century, and a forerunner of Pop art. Jasper Johns uses commonplace images such as flags, maps, targets or numbers as the starting-point for his art prints. He explains that ‘the things the mind already knows’ were his ideal subject because of the host of varied meanings each carried with it. By representing common objects and images in the realm of fine art, Jasper Johns broke down the boundaries traditionally separating fine art and everyday life.
