Golconde 1953 by Rene Magritte
Possibly the most celebrated Belgian artist of the twentieth century, Rene Magritte was a pioneer of surrealism and his work has achieved high acclaim all over the world.
Rene Magritte studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels between 1916 and 1918 and he became well known for his art prints - using ordinary objects in an unusual context, giving new meanings to familiar things. One of Magritte's most famous paintings is a large single pipe, and at the bottom of the painting, in French it states; “This is not a pipe.” Rene Magritte’s point is simple: the painting is not a pipe: it is an Image of a pipe. This is his frame of mind, challenging to use common objects in unusual juxtapositions and perspectives.
