ARTIST STORY
Retna is a world renowned contemporary graffiti artist. He was introduced to the Los Angeles mural scene at an early age, and has lead one of the largest graffiti art collectives in the city since he was in high school. Retna explains that he was inspired to pursue art after seeing graffiti on the freeway - and picked his moniker from the lyrics of a Wu Tang song that resonated with him in his youth. His marks resemble the calligraphy of multiple cultures and combines visual linguistics, urban poetics, and a large range of media including graffiti, photography, and painting. Though he composes his works in English and Spanish Retna explains, “I want my text to feel universal. I want people from different cultures to all find some similarity in it—whether they can read it or not.” In addition to exhibiting at institutions and galleries in Los Angeles, Miami, London, New York and Hong Kong, Retna has done advertising work for brands such as Vista Jet, Louis Vuitton, and Nike. His artwork adorns the cover of Justin Bieber's Purpose album that debuted in 2015. Discover limited editions art prints here at artrepublic.Retna is a world renowned contemporary graffiti artist.
