Crossing the line from graphic design to fine art, Danish born artist Lene Bladbjerg’s work is infused with a gently haunting character, as bold type and strong composition dominate the frame. For her butterfly series, Bladbjerg hand paints the blades of a Stanley Knife with intricate and colourful patterns to recreate the wings of a butterfly, mounting them in perfect symmetry within a heavy black frame. The juxtaposition of gossamer wing against sharp metal is brilliantly expressive, and Bladbjerg’s strong graphic touch lends the series inimitable aesthetic power.
‘Sapphire Azure Butterfly’ depicts a delicate, chalk-blue butterfly, its wings laced with laced with soft black veins and finished with thick, monochrome edging. Printed with the name of the genus, Bladbjerg’s piece artfully reimagines the conventional butterfly display-case with contemporary panache.
Lene Bladbjerg is a danish artist based in London. She was born in Denmark in 1974, but grew up in Brussels, Belgium. The multinational environment prompted Lene's passion for exploring new countries and cultures, which has influenced her work as an artist.
In 1995, Lene attended Kent Institute of Art and Design, Rochester, England and later graduated from London College of Printing with a 1:1 Degree honours in Graphic and Media Design in 2000.
