A key exponent of the ‘abstract graffiti’ movement in the 1990s, Remi Rough began his career in the 80s on the walls of the city, creating large scale murals which soon developed into abstract-expressionism-meets-graffiti-art. Today, Remi Rough’s limited edition prints read something like, ‘Malevich-meets-Mondrian-meets-the metropolis’ - in other words, big, bold, colourful, and utterly unique. For ‘Mutescreamer’, ribbons of primary colour seems to enfold out of the page. Using subtle tones to create shadow, along with a strong, minimal composition, Rough draws out a sense of depth from the two dimensional image, suggesting the presence of a space behind or beyond the image with fantastic artistic prowess.
About The Artist - Remi Rough
Remi Rough makes work that deals with visual semantics, distilling fragments of the world around him into powerful abstract compositions. His pseudo-sculptural paintings and large-scale murals are instilled with a ‘street-wise energy and tension’ born from early experiences as a young graffiti writer, painting walls and trains across the world. Remi’s work is exemplified by an instinctive use of colour and geometric form, expressed with equal effect when witnessing one of his vast murals or his refined abstract paintings on canvas or panel.
