The work of Not Now Nancy stages a dichotomy between a pastoral past and a modern urbanism, bringing conflicting themes together into a harmonious and compellingly beautiful blend. Her prints are a fusion of layers, building found, antique illustrations into hand drawn elements and symbolic contemporary imagery to achieve a unique and captivating aesthetic.
‘Marionette’ features an assemblage of weird and wonderful parts, resulting in a deeply surreal aesthetic. A greyscale illustration of a ribcage and pelvis sits at the heart of the print, its vertebrae replaced with a series of mechanical workings and devices. At the shoulder blades, Not Now Nancy has added a majestic pair of butterfly wings, detailed in soft shades of lilac and sky-blue, and edged with drips of black pigment and hand applied gold leaf, for texture and definition. It’s a hypnotic piece, dark and haunting and saturated with breathtaking beauty.

“Shadow Floating is a method used to beautifully mount artwork onto a foam core using artcare restore – a fully archival and reversible mount. The result is the artwork appearing to float securely upon a backing mount board - creating a wonderful shadow around the edges of the paper."
Not Now Nancy is a print maker & designer who works from her studio in Bromley and The Thames Barrier Print Studio. Her work explores the dichotomy between opposing ideas and instincts. Using the fragility of nature or bygone times and the iconic symbolism of modern day urban life, she tries to create a continuous, harmonious blend. Combining found antique illustration, hand drawn elements and modern symbolic imagery she achieves a finished piece which provokes a paradoxical result and an ever evolving story.
