Contemporary artist Lee Ellis is a master of merging styles: drawing together the figurative with the abstract, Ellis’s paintings are bold, bright, and brimming with expressive character.
‘Flamingo Drinking from a Cocktail Glass’ forms part of a larger series, inspired by the lyrics of Tom Waits. With its title taken from the track ‘Jockey Full Of Bourbon’, the painting mines the depths of surrealism, depicting a bright pink flamingo, perched behind a chaotic cocktail bar. In its midst, glasses and bottles are tumbling, suspended strings fall from the ceiling, and a goggle-eyed gent in a white suit props himself hauntingly at the end of the bar. Although indebted to the work of Waits, the painting has a character is entirely its own: a truly singular work of contemporary art.
Lee Ellis graduated from the University of the West of England, where he studied Graphic Design in 2006. Despite working in the Graphic Design industry he found his artistic expression grew into portrait painting, developing, over the years, a personal and distinctive style.
His insatiable desire to create brings him to embrace different artistic mediums, from printmaking to drawing and painting. With an expressive and bold style, immediately striking with his unusual juxtaposition of bright colours and dark subjects, Lee’s paintings in particular convey an emotional and visceral angst within his figures. From humans to animals, he never fails to depict the inner turmoil of his characters. He achieves this effect by employing heavy, raw and expressive brushstrokes that make his painting style poignant and immediately affecting.
Lee currently works and lives in Bristol, UK.
