‘Faking Confidence’ is an original, mixed media painting on a framed canvas by contemporary artist Lee Ellis. The piece is signed by the artist.

Contemporary artist Lee Ellis draws together the figurative with the abstract, to create textural paintings that brim with expressive character. Often dark in tone and mood, Ellis’ work is reminiscent of the tortured works of Francis Bacon, shot through with an abstract expressionist quality, that makes for a powerful, contemporary aesthetic.

Two figures dominate the scene of ‘Faking Confidence’, their proportions distorted to unsettling effect. Ellis fills the frame with figurative details that shade into abstraction through their heavy texture: is that a decorated Christmas tree in the background? What’s the meaning of the huge, red disc that seems to roll into view? And how do we read the figures’ physical gesture and blank, hollow eyes? Full of allusions but ever elusive, ‘Faking Confidence’ is a powerful work of artistic presence.

About The Artist - Lee Ellis

Lee Ellis graduated from the University of the West of England, where he studied Graphic Design in 2006. Despite working in the Graphic Design industry he found his artistic expression grew into portrait painting, developing, over the years, a personal and distinctive style.

His insatiable desire to create brings him to embrace different artistic mediums, from printmaking to drawing and painting. With an expressive and bold style, immediately striking with his unusual juxtaposition of bright colours and dark subjects, Lee’s paintings in particular convey an emotional and visceral angst within his figures. From humans to animals, he never fails to depict the inner turmoil of his characters. He achieves this effect by employing heavy, raw and expressive brushstrokes that make his painting style poignant and immediately affecting.

Lee currently works and lives in Bristol, UK.
