Contemporary artist Fei Alexeli is known for her distinctly retro collages and cut-ups. Often depicting galactic vistas with fragments of 1950s, space-age visions of the future, her prints are simultaneously backward and forward looking, speaking to our present age by opening out the utopian spaces from the past that contemporary culture calls for.
‘Facing the Moon’ depicts an inky night sky, flecked with tiny speckles of silver light, and viewed through a pink, proscenium arch. On the threshold stands a woman in Egyptian dress, a cratered moon balanced in her outstretched palm as the title words hover above her in pink, neon letters. Filling the foreground, Alexeli has added palm fronds and tropical pools for a beautifully dreamy vista.
Contemporary artist Fei Alexeli is known for her distinctly retro collages and cut-ups. Hailing from Greece, Alexeli studied architecture in both Oxford and London and discovered a passion for photography, photo-montage, and the power of digital manipulation. Her collages and prints speak to the architectural: incorporating elements form the built environment, her work is tangibly spatial, layering to create depth and perspective.
Her prints have a cosmic touch, often depicting galactic vistas with the magazine fragments of 1950s space-age visions of the future. Simultaneously backward and forward looking, Alexeli’s prints speak to our present age, opening out the utopian spaces of escapism that contemporary society calls for. At once whimsical and powerful, the incorporation of ‘millennial pink' into much of her work crafts a sense of dreamy romance while responding to the polarisation of gender stereotypes. As she has said, “I think it is a very powerful and provocative colour which simultaneously can be very controversial... It is definitely one of the strongest associated colours and I love to play with it.” Alexeli splits her time between London and Amsterdam and has exhibited around the world, including London, New York, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Hamburg.
