ARTIST STORY

Emily Stevens

Emily Stevens is a contemporary painter whose work expresses energy and feeling in a manner that rouses an instinctive emotive response. Her poolside paintings are ephemeral and nostalgic, and capture the sense of a tranquil space into which the viewer is invited to immerse themselves. Playing with the boundaries between drawing and painting, her work often uses collaged elements to link the two. Emily was Artist in Residence at the oldest outdoor swimming pool in the UK, Pells Pool, Lewes.

A NOTE FROM US

WHAT WE LOVE

We love how Emily uses a rich colour palette to enhance the subject of her compositions. Her sense for colour is instinctive and comes from her own experience of synaesthesia, in which sounds and tastes have their own corresponding colour identity. Using her own rare condition, Emily can do what other artists cannot: give true and visceral meaning to colour. This intriguing nature of her paintings is heightened by her unusual compositions and strange placement of her figures.
