About The Artist - David Studwell

We’ve been working with David Studwell since 2014.

David is a contemporary British artist and printmaker whose artwork explores the lives of the rich and famous and the cult of celebrity from the 1960s and 70s. Deeply inspired by the icons of the time, his work has a tendency to reveal the sinister side of fame and nostalgia. David is best known for highlighting or low-lighting celebrity culture, capturing celebrities either at the height of fame or in  moments of vulnerability. We love the honesty, the familiar and not so distant history that unravels in each artwork, making us feel as though we are discovering more about Americana’s sophisticated icons.

David’s work also tracks the history and legacy of photography in the twentieth Century. He spent time creating with Sir Elton John and renowned photographer Terry O’Neill to produce ‘Elton John: Home Run-Dodger Stadium 1975,’ a six-colour screen print with diamond dust. The print is a re-working of Terry’s iconic photograph, capturing Elton at the height of his fame in 1975. Studwell uses more recent advances in technology to his advantage to add more sophistication and depth to older images. Their body of work aims to capture the ‘grace, dignity and mystique’ of older celebrity culture, as opposed to modern-day fame which is relentlessly documented by the cameramen of paparazzi.
