From a limited edition of 95, 'Dreams Can Come True' is a 35-colour screensprint on premium Somerset satin 410gsm paper. Spiller was a veteran of the British Pop Art scene and throughout his career, his work featured warm and joyful representations of much-loved characters from cartoons and popular culture. This edition was intended to sit alongside Spiller's 'I'll See You in My Dreams', thus uniting images of Popeye and Olive Oyl. The edition was published posthumously and each print is signed by his widow Moira and son Xavier, and comes with a full certificate of authenticity.
I really want to make paintings that put some magic on the wall. Some of them are straightforward things. Some are wild things. But underneath, it says ‘I love you.’

Our Notes
As a child, David Spiller (1942-2018) was obsessed with copying cartoons. It was this early passion that led him to the Slade in the 1960s and Spiller never lost his love for cartoon characters, continuing to use their imagery throughout his career. Minnie and Mickey, Popeye and Olive, Donald and Daisy, are all instantly recognisable subjects that carry with them the warmth of nostalgia.
Working in large formats on his floor, cartoon characters were stencilled by the artist, then graffitied over with a playful and energetic scribble bringing bold splashes of colour to the pieces. True to the Pop Art ethos, the lyrical phrases in Spiller's work were borrowed from a range of sources: from much-loved songs by Bob Dylan, the Beatles and the Pogues, to the lullabies sung to him as a child.
We love that 'love' is celebrated across David Spiller's art, whether in the title of an artwork, or – as in this case – within the handwritten notes in the image.

David Spiller's art was filled with life and energy. His works use a blend of styles, mixing Pop art - its bright colours, punchy texts and clean lines - with deceptively simple expressionism.

On top of his striking images, he adds another layer in scrawled text that often includes lines from favourite songs such as in 'I've Been Loving you a Long Time'. He has added the lines 'You're a big girl now' and 'like a rolling stone,' both borrowed from Bob Dylan.
