About The Artist - Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, commonly known as Auguste Renoir (1841 –1919), was a French artist, who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style of the early twentieth century. A style in which members sought to represent the first impression of an object upon the viewer.

As an innovative artist, Auguste Renoir started out as an apprentice to a porcelain painter and studied drawing in his free time. After years as a struggling painter, Renoir helped launch the Impressionism movement in 1870’s. By the mid-1880’s however, he had broken with the movement, to apply a more disciplined, formal technique to portraits and figure paintings, particularly of women.

Renoir was so passionate about painting, that he even continued when he was old and suffering from severe arthritis. He eventually became one of the most highly regarded artists of his time.
