Artwork Details
41 and a half pill sculptures carved from a variety of stones, displayed in a perspex cabinet
Size: Accompanied by a signed and numbered COA
Additional Information:
Please note: this sculpture has a lead time of 2 months. Framed in a clear Perspex cabinet, custom made to house 41 stone pills and a cheeky half. "My inspiration to make this piece came from the Ecstasy pill identifier charts made by the government’s drug awareness campaign back in the 1990s. The charts would show the many different colours and logos on ecstasy pills. My main challenge to make this piece was trying to source coloured stones to match the brightly coloured pills. Luckily I have a great stone supplier in Rajasthan in India who sourced many of the stones in the piece. There are 25 different types of stone from around the world, including sandstone from Rajasthan, soap stone from Afghanistan, Portland limestone, Nabresina limestone, Carrara marble from Italy." - Dan David

Dan David is an award-winning sculptor and stone carver based in Norwich. Dan David’s art is informed by an interest in developing new languages in stone carving. Dan demonstrates curiosity and humour, exploring the relationship between traditional techniques and contemporary visual culture.
Dan trained in traditional architectural stonemasonry, stone carving and letter cutting at Bath and qualified in 1995. Dan investigates the interplay between materiality, concept, and scale, with an experimental approach that marks a shift in conventional practices with stone. Dan chooses the stone depending on the piece he intends to create, and the techniques are informed by his traditional training. Dan represents temporary symbols of the time in a permanent material with historic associations, creating a playful tension. Dan challenges the viewer, sometimes disguising the stone with spray paint. His work is a memorial of the significant and fun memories and experiences of his life, which through carving in stone, he makes permanent.
We love how Dan is dedicated to developing a new sculptural language, reimagining the relationships between traditional techniques and contemporary visual culture. Embracing the unconventional, Dan plays with the permanence of his sculpting materials and the temporary nature of the subjects he chooses to represent. Dan embraces the unconventional and transforms the historical connotations of both the subject and material of his art, playing with ideas of permanence.
