‘Cap’n Cornstarch’ is a large sculpture by contemporary artist Ron English. From a limited edition of 30.

Ron English is known for combining expert craftsmanship with a cynical, humorous critique of American culture. English coined the term ‘POPaganda’ to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superheroes and comic strips, to art-historical iconography. His work includes art prints, billboards, and sculptures.

‘Cap’n Cornstarch’ is a searing comment on American consumerist culture, fattening up its children on sugary cereal with the promise of a free plastic toy at the bottom of every box. In English’s twisted reality, the toy itself has gobbled up the saccharine cereal, resulting in Cap’n Cornstarch, an overweight version of the Quaker Oats character Cap’n Crunch. This monumental, life size figure, complete with articulated arms, proves that toys don’t just have to be for kids.
