Contemporary artist Matt Jukes is known for his abstracted landscapes, which fuse place, recollection, and emotion, for a meditative and moving aesthetic. With a background in graphic design and print making, Jukes's work is imbued with a sense of form and tactility: layers are built up within each piece, to explore the possibilities of colour and texture to create a discursive, visual character within the confines of the printed space.

And the Waves Crashed In II translates Jukes' haunting blend of natural beauty and tactile technique into three-dimensional form. Layering sheets of torn paper, in shades of ocean-blue and forest-green, Jukes creates a miniature landscape enclosed in perspex: a series of rippling contour lines that bring the aerial view of the earth to life with astonishing visual presence.

Matt Jukes

We love the way he explores his own relationship to emotion and memory through the creation of his artwork, and in turn invites the viewer to explore their own emotions and forgotten places. The arrangement of colour is integral to the artist’s work, with each layer built upon the last through a 200-year-old flatbed lithographic press.  Matt received a Bachelor of Design from RMIT in Melbourne, Australia before studying Printmaking at Morely College. He has exhibited in both solo and group shows in London, New York, and Melbourne. His artwork can be found in Claridge’s Hotel permanent collection in London, Nubo Resturant in Sydney, Maybourne Hotel Beverly Hills Permanent Collection in Los Angeles, and aboard a fleet of cruise ships.  We’ve been working with Matt Jukes since 2019.
