European Abstract Silk Screen Prints Black and White Art Prints for Frames

About The Artist - Pierre Soulages

Pierre Soulages is a French painter, engraver, and sculptor known as a leading member of the European movement of Abstract Expressionism and described by the French president Francois Hollande as "the world's greatest living artist". Firstly, influenced by Romanesque architecture and Celtic monuments from his region in the south of France, he began to paint as a child. Then, he studied in the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts, Paris, but he was disappointed by the traditional instruction. In 1946, after having served in the military during World War II, he developed a wholly abstract style, producing canvases with overlapping black, in opposition to the major trends in French abstract painting of the time. Influenced by East Asian calligraphy, Pierre Soulages created art prints of black bars in front of a white ground, using light as a work material. “I don’t work with black,” he said “I work with the light that reflects it”.
