‘Ridiculous Swan Thing’ is a novelty inflatable pool accessory by contemporary artist David Shrigley.

Acclaimed British artist David Shrigley is known for his small-small-scale, black ink sketches, which play on our expectations of figurative skill and expertise. Suffused with deadpan humour, Shrigley’s naive images are accompanied by laconic pops of wry text, intensifying the offbeat naivety of his unique aesthetic.

Transforming the surface sketch to the three-dimensional object, ‘Ridiculous Swan Thing’ is Shrigley’s response to the current cult of the extravagant pool accessory. But you can forget the fabulous flamingo or the magical unicorn: the sear of Shrigely’s satire lies in the pitch-perfect meeting of word and image. Here, the title replaced the signature scribbled text accompaniment: nothing could better describe the blank-faced, puffy-white form than Shrigley’s tongue-in-cheek title - hello, ridiculous swan thing.

About The Artist - David Shrigley

Acclaimed British artist David Shrigley is known for his naive ink sketches and text-based drawings. Graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1991, Shrigley spent years working within the music industry, directing videos for Blur, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and Queens of the Stone Age. Instantly recognisable, Shrigley’s work takes the form of small-scale sketches, usually rendered in simple, black ink, which play with our expectations of figurative skill and expertise.

Deliberately distorting his figures, Shrigley creates the illusion of childish ineptitude, drawing impossible perspectives and strange angles in rough, hard lines. Suffused with deadpan humour, Shrigley’s images are usually accompanied by small sections of wry text, which intensify the offbeat naivety of his unique aesthetic. In 2016, Shrigley’s ‘Really Good’ sculpture was installed on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth: an elongated thumbs up that captures the playfulness of his sketches in heavy, cast bronze. Alongside prints and originals, Shrigley creates sculptures, books, and art objects, as well as political cartoons and animations.
