Pieter Bruegel (1525 –1569) was a Netherlandish Renaissance painter and printmaker commonly known as Pieter Bruegel the Elder – because he was the greatest member of a large and important southern Netherlandish family of active artists.
He was an astoundingly inventive painter and draftsman, seen as the greatest Flemish painter of the 16th century, whose landscapes, often witty scenes of peasant life are particularly renowned.
Due to the continuity of the family trade and the industry that developed in art prints after his works, Pieter Bruegel’s impact was widespread and long lasting.
