Bertrand-Jean Redon (1840 - 1916) better known as Odilon Redon, was a Symbolist painter and printmaker, born in France. Odilon was a nickname derived from his mother, Odile.
Although remaining a very private person throughout his lifetime, his oils and pastels, chiefly still life works with flowers, won him the admiration of Henri Matisse and other painters as an important colourist.
His art prints explore haunted, often macabre themes and foreshadowed the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. The Surrealists regarded Odilon Redon as one of their greatest predecessors.
