Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a German-born painter, sculptor and printmaker; one of the leading Surrealists. Ernst began to study philosophy at the University of Bonn, and in 1909, he became increasingly preoccupied with painting and pursuit as a self-taught artist. A soldier in World War I, Ernst emerged deeply traumatized and highly critical of western culture. Ernst's artistic vision, along with his humor and verve comes through strongly in his art prints. In 1919, he founded the Cologne Dada group with Johannes Theodor Baargeld - an art movement formed during the First World War in Zurich in negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war.
