Lucio Fontana (1899 – 1968) was an Italian painter, sculptor and theorist of Argentine birth. He is mostly known for his Concetto Spaziale series, which includes monochromatic canvas works either slashed or punctured. He was the founder of Spatialism but also had ties to Arte Povera. His works was widely shown in institutions around the world, most recently in 2014 in a large retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. A slash painting named Concetto Spaziale, Attese (1965), sold for a record £8.4 million at Sotheby's London in 2015.
