You probably know this leading artist and intellectual of the Italian Renaissance for his painting of "Mona Lisa" as well as "The Last Supper". Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) was a great creative mind, and hugely influential as an artist and sculptor - but also immensely talented as an engineer, scientist and inventor.
The fame of his surviving art prints has meant that he has been regarded primarily as an artist, but also as a brilliant mind. Leonardo Da Vinci wrote about, and drew upon subjects including; geology, anatomy, flight, gravity and optics. He is the one who 'invented' the bicycle, airplane, helicopter, and parachute, some 500 years ahead of their time. His science was expressed through his art, making him an 'artist-engineer'.
