Lawrence Alma-Tadema was one of the most renowned painters of late nineteenth century Britain. He was trained in Antwerp – and like many of his Dutch contemporaries, began by mastering the art of genre painting, specialising in historical scenes.
Lawrence Alma-Tadema began with medieval subjects, but then following a visit to Pompeii in 1863 - turned to the ancient world.
