Contemporary director and video artist Karim Zeriahen is known for his choreographic, motion-driven artwork, translating the body of the dancer on stage to the realm of digital moving-image. Working closely with choreographers, Zeriahen has been adapting stage creation to video since the early 90s. His documentary-cum-photographic practice intimately places the camera alongside the dancer, capturing and magnifying nuanced bodily movements, in order to go beyond representation towards a kind of multi-sensory interaction. Zeriahen’s work explores the possibility of recreating the Renaissance portrait through motion picture: his models sit for motionless duration, as if posing for a portrait, so that Zeriahen’s lens registers subtle signs of life - from respiration to eye-blinks - breathing vitality into the stilled tradition. Branching out into the art of printmaking, today Zeriahen plays with the relationship between typography and texture, evoking emotion through the delicate simplicity of form, colour, and poetic sentiment.
